Last week I attended a womens’ networking lunch discussing the topic of work/life balance and how to juggle all the balls in the air.
I find this topic fascinating and disappointing at the same time.
Many of these discussions talk about how to balance having a family and having a career. It’s a fair discussion. However, many of my friends and I don’t have a family or kids and we still struggle with finding balance in our lives. This makes me wonder is the struggle really about work/life balance or are we missing something else in our lives?
There are three questions (or their answers really) that I am curious about:
#1 Are we taking on too many projects?
Maybe we are filling up our lives with too many to-do-lists, life projects that make us busy rather than help us enjoy the moment.
#2 Should we aim to do less rather than more?
Maybe letting go of things and do less rather than more is the way forward. We may need to ask ourselves whether we want to take on a new project to fulfill a personal quest or whether we think we are supposed to do this project.
#3 Are we missing out connecting with our families and friends?
And maybe we don’t always need tangible help, but surrounding ourselves with family and friends to discuss what moves us, to ask for their point of view, will help us find our balance. Maybe we are just lost in our world of thousand Facebook friends, but very few real connections and we try to fill the void with new projects.
I don’t have answers to the above, but the last question is something I have been thinking about for a while now and it keeps coming back up. There may be some truth in that. I will keep exploring.
What are your thoughts on this?
