Give yourself permission to take care of yourself. It’s straight forward, if you can’t take care of yourself, how will you be able to take care of others?
We are often brought up with a mindset of a good person is someone who puts others before themselves. In my mind there is a fundamental flaw with this idea. How can you take care of your family, your partner, your work, if you are not taking care of yourself? When you are the best version of yourself, you are in a much better position to help others.
I heard a great analogy to this: Remember when you are on a plane and the flight attendant goes through the safety briefing? What do they tell you? Put on the oxygen mask on yourself first before you help others. You are no good to others if you can’t breath. This really resonated with me. Here is my take on what self care means and how best to practice:
#1 Take “me”-time every day
Do something that gives you a moment of relaxation and reflection every day. Meditate, listen to your favorite song, dance in the living room, read a chapter of your favorite book, make yourself a cup of tea – anything that gives you a time-out and brings a smile back to your face.
#2 Speak your truth
Say what you mean and this includes saying “no”. Don’t be afraid to put yourself first. Also don’t be afraid to say “yes” to things that may be out of your comfort zone, but you always wanted to try.
#3 Never give up on your dreams

#4 Be kind to yourself
Treat yourself just like you want to be treated. Don’t talk bad about yourself and do give yourself the benefit of a doubt and the kindness that you extend to others. You deserve kindness!
#5 Nourish your body
Eat healthy and organic meals as often as you can. Drink plenty of water. Get massages. You have a maintenance plan for your car, don’t you think your body deserves one, too?
#6 Laugh loud and often
Get your girlfriends together and do something silly.
