I have seen a lot of discussions and workshops recently on building your personal brand. None of them have been clear to me on what building your personal brand really means. And none of them have given me any tools on how to build my brand.
In an attempt to figure out what we need to do to understand our brand, I am going to explore three questions that should help us understand what we stand for and therefore what we value. This will become our personal brand.
- What are your core values?
- How do you want to be known?
- How do you want to live every day?
What are your core values and believes? Your brand will build on your values and believes. You can’t build your brand that doesn’t align with who you are and what you believe in. Here are words that come to my mind as my values: trust, friendship, support, loyalty, courage, helping each other, never giving up, starting each day fresh, going after my dreams, adventure.
This is the part that answers Who Am I?
How do you want to be known? Understanding what you want to be known for is taking who you are and showing it to the world. I want to be known as someone who courageously lives every day to its fullest with all of life’s ups and downs. I want to be known as someone who can motivate and help others to thrive in their lives. Ultimately I want to make this world a better place through connecting with people.
This is the part that answers What Do I Want The World To Notice About Me?
How do you want to live every day? I believe this to be the part that is building your brand. Living a life true to your values and believes is where your authentic self will shine through. The choices you make every day in living your core values that’s where you are building your brand. Every single day. If your values and how you want to be known align and you act accordingly you are living a life of authenticity.
Understanding how these three questions interact and build on each other, will hopefully give you a framework on how you build your brand.
